Memoirs of Cardinal de Retz
Comment Share
Retz, Jean François Paul de Gondi de, 1613-1679

WHEN we cast a glance over the totality ot the literary production of the seventeenth century, we ascertain that Memoirs occupy a large place in it. The explanation of the fact is obvious. At this moment the " Fronde " is profoundly agitating various classes of French society. It is natural, therefore, that this should incite contemporary writers to give us their historic personal confidences, …

Baptist missionary pioneers among Negroes : sketches
Comment Share
Reynolds, Mary C

The sketches of the Home Mission workers contained in this book were contributed some years ago to HOPE, the official organ of the Fireside Schools. Believing they should be preserved they have been arranged for publication in book form which may be useful for study in missionary societies, and for general reading.

Hutton, Maurice, 1856-1940

papers in this volume were originally com- 1 posed either as popular lectures to miscel¬ laneous audiences in Ontario Xoyoi tiqotqsjitixoC, or loyoi fjQixoi, or Xoyoi fiais/zxixoi, as an older sophist of Greece would have called them : or — in other cases — as lectures to University societies, authors’ societies and the like in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa : or, in the third case, wer…

Martin Rattler
Comment Share
Ballantyne, R. M. (Robert Michael), 1825-1894

TARTIN RATTLER was a very bad boy. At least his aunt, Mrs. Dorothy Grumbit, said so ; and certainly she ought to have known, if anybody should, for Martin lived with her, and was, as she herself expressed it, " the bane of her existence, the very torment of her life." No doubt of it whatever, according to Aunt Dorothy Grumbit's showing, Martin Rattler was " a remarkably bad boy."

Crystal Thurberwald; or, the Evangel of Tappaneau
Comment Share
Kellogg, Ira Ariel

In the following pages Charles, Count of Tappaneau, represents simply the alert spirit which during the great war ever characterized the Belgians. He is in no sense a real -character. All of the situations are pure fiction. Real names are used only as complimentary and with due respect, with the exception of Niels de Bode, which character pos sibly is too severe.

Flowers of the farm
Comment Share
Cooke, Arthur O. (Arthur Owens), 1867-1930

I THINK that some of you have been with me at Willow Farm before to-day. When we were there we went into the farmer's fields in early spring, and saw the men and horses at work with ploughs and harrows. A little later on we saw some of the crops sown, such as barley and turnips. In summer we were in the hay- and corn-fields, and later still we saw the ricks being made.
