B-Vitamins and One-Carbon Metabolism

Folate, vitamin B12, vitamin B6 and riboflavin play a key role as coenzymes in one-carbon metabolism which, in turn, is essential for a broad range of fundamental physiological processes, including RNA and DNA synthesis, cell division, tissue growth and methylation. Deficiencies or imbalance of B-vitamins, as well as genetic polymorphisms and environmental factors, are shown to disturb the normal function of one-carbon metabolism with adverse effects on human health. Although a vast volume of research has already been conducted in this area, there are still significant gaps in our knowledge that require further investigation. This prompted the journal Nutrients to publish a Special Issue focused on the novel findings in the area of B-vitamins and one-carbon metabolism. The Special Issue published 26 research papers and reviews on various topics pertinent to one-carbon metabolism. Several of the published papers examined the relationship between folate and the metabolically related B-vitamins and degenerative diseases in ageing. Porter et al. provided an extensive review on the causes and consequences of low B-vitamin status and the risk for development of cardiovascular disease, cognitive dysfunction and osteoporosis. In a large cohort of French older adults, followed for approximately 10 years, Lefevre-Arbogast et al. demonstrated that higher intake of folate was associated with a decreased risk of dementi
