Sociology of Interdisciplinarity
Interdisciplinarity is important. This message is so commonly stated—
whether in, for example, call texts published by research funding organisations, university research and impact strategies, or by policymakers and
practitioners—that the implications of what is actually being advocated for
are often backgrounded or, at worse, forgotten. As such, the lived experiences of those delivering ‘interdisciplinarity’, and indeed the ripple effects
onto what forms of knowledge are produced (and why), rarely get the
attention that it deserves
