Primary research for this book and its companion volume was conducted
during 2017–2020. Bearing in mind the pressures upon those associated
with Hizmet not only in Turkey, but also beyond it, and which for some
interviewees have ranged from loss of employment, expropriation of property and funds through to imprisonment; the need to undertake irregular
and sometimes dangerous migration; threats of violence to persons, family
and property; as well as state attempts at legal extradition and/or illegal
rendition, acknowledgements for their kind assistance are especially due to
the twenty-nine people whom I interviewed.
