The idea for this book began to take shape in June 2019, under the working title ‘The new public university: local missions and global goals’. As with
many plans at the time, the ability to dedicate time to write the book and
indeed the actual substance of the book were overtaken by events. The
emergence of COVID at the end of 2019, and its global spread in the first
half of 2020, meant that we made no progress apart from exchanging a
few emails checking up on one another’s welfare.
