Pada 9 Juli 1709, lebih dari 2.300 buku dijual di lelang publik di toko keluarga penerbit Boom di Amsterdam. Buku-buku tersebut terdiri dari 'perpustakaan yang indah' (treffelyke bibliotheek) milik patrician Pieter de Graeff (1638–1707), anggota keluarga regent yang terkemuka. Monograf ini mengacu pada sumber arsip yang tidak diterbitkan dan katalog lelang buku De Graeff untuk mengeksplorasi perpustakaannya dan signifikansinya. Sambil melacak mikrohistori kerabat De Graeff dalam konteks sejarah Belanda yang berkembang, penelitian ini mengungkapkan koleksi bukunya sebagai mikrocosmos pengetahuan yang terakumulasi selama beberapa generasi. Ruangan buku De Graeff -- ruang perpustakaan di kediamannya di Amsterdam -- juga diselidiki dan divisualisasikan melalui grafik komputer, menghasilkan model 3D yang interaktif dan beranotasi secara online.
