The notion of Brazil as a ‘racial laboratory’ has fascinated and facilitated the interests of both

racial mixture integral to thinking about the country’s historical formation (De Souza and
Santos 2014). As a result Brazil has long been constituted as both a valuable site and source of
genetic data.
